Lubbock Meals on Wheels provides both forms of support to homebound, elderly and disabled people in Lubbock and Wolfforth. Its mission is practical and focused: deliver nutritious meals, reduce social isolation and help people remain independent in their own homes.
More Than a Weekday Lunch
The organization began in 1971 by delivering weekday meals to 29 recipients. Today, more than 1,700 volunteers help Lubbock Meals on Wheels serve over 1,050 meals each day and 675 weekend meals every week. In 2024 alone, the organization delivered more than 400,000 meals.
Most lunches include an entree, two sides, and bread or dessert. Sugar-free desserts, soft meals, bland diets and vegetarian options are available for clients with different dietary needs. More than 840 people also receive breakfast three days a week.
Support continues when the regular weekday schedule pauses. Weekend meal sacks provide frozen meals and easy-to-prepare foods to clients without access to other meal assistance. Extra food and fresh fruit are delivered before holiday closures, while emergency boxes containing shelf-stable food help clients prepare for days when conditions interrupt delivery.
Care for the Person and the Household
A volunteer’s arrival may be the only visit a homebound client receives that day. When someone is not home to accept a delivery, the organization follows up on that person’s well-being.
Additional programs make each visit more personal. Depending on availability, clients may receive fresh flowers, magazines, and a cake and card on their birthdays. The Pet Program supplies food every other week for more than 520 dogs and cats whose companionship is important to their owners. Limited veterinary care and boarding assistance may also be available.
Supporting Our Community Cause
Shropshire Insurance of Texas is currently highlighting Lubbock Meals on Wheels as our Community Cause. For every referral who receives a no-obligation insurance quote, our agency will donate $10 to support the organization’s work.
Our clients can also help by making a direct donation, contributing requested food or pet supplies, or volunteering. Opportunities include delivering meals, helping in the kitchen, packing weekend sacks, assisting with office work and transporting clients’ pets to veterinary appointments.
